Title: A is for Abandon
Characters: England (Britannia), France (Gallia)
Rating: G

For a project I started in another fandom, an ABC list. Twenty-six drabbles in alphabetical order according to prompt. The first one beginning with A, the second with B, etc.

He was abandoned.

He was abandoned on a rock with beasts for brothers, surrounded by the sea and imprisoned by the trees he hid in. He feared to go out and eat, and so he stayed in the dark and chilly misted woods, pressing against the rough bark and looking into the vibrant green canopy. He hated it when people came, because all the did was abandon him, abandon him, abandon him.

He hated it even more when others of his kind came, too, because their abandonment stung twice as much.

It isn't any wonder when he meets Gallia, then, that he doesn't trust him. He stays to his trees and spits at the one who calls and looks for Britannia, a Roman name given by a Roman bastard who (he sneers) abandoned him.

Gallia doesn't give up. If anything, he doubles his efforts and tries harder. Britannia sits in his tree, and steals out for the treats Gallia starts to leave at night, when it's dark enough he can slip out and follow others around.

One night, Gallia turns on him and grabs him, laughs when he kicks and shouts, and presses a finger to his lips.

“Shh, little caterpillar. I'm not going to hurt you.”

Britannia becomes a complete and utter nuisance after that. He follows Gallia everywhere, yells and insults him – but when it comes down to it, and he's cut up and sore from ambushes and arrows, he cries and holds onto Gallia and lets him clean the wounds. He's only a child, after all.

One day, Gallia doesn't come, and Britannia sneers at himself in the water. He's been abandoned again, and he knows it.
