Title: Too Early
Characters: England, Canada, America
Rating: G

For LJ's 64damn_prompts' prompt '2 a.m'.

England is usually a peaceful sleeper – deep in slumber, so much so France has snuck up on him more than once and feathered kisses on his skin until he woke up and threw him out – but tonight he is restless, turning and tossing and, when he finally gets to sleep, awaken by the smallest creak of a door opening. He tenses slightly under the blankets, opens his eyes and glances at the heavy grandfather clock. By the light of the waning moon, he sees the time; two o’clock.

Too early.

The room is silent and he berates himself, murmuring it must’ve been the wind and curling up tighter in his fort of blankets three, feigning sleep and listening instead to the quiet hum that pitch quiet brings. Something steps lightly across the floor, and he moves the blankets just enough to see two figures, hands entwined and trying to be careful and hush, with one biting back sniffles and the other boldly moving towards his bed.

Ah. Canada and America.

For once, it is America who’s crying and curls up against him; for once, it is Canada who watches, mute, and smiles when England pulls him in and they cuddle together for a moment, enjoying the warmth. England pulls back, wipes the tears, and looks to his boys for answers.

“What’s all this then?”

“M-Mattie had a bad dream—”

Canada doesn’t even try to correct his sniffling brother.

“—s-so we decided to come in here and see if y-you could, y’know, k-keep him calm.”

England chuckles, pulls them close, and reminds them that the British Empire would never let anything ill befall them.
