Title: Birthday Surprise
Characters: Spain, England, France
Rating: G

When Spain opens the note, so carefully sealed with crimson wax and the stamp of a lion, he flushes red in pleasure and surprise at the contents within. It's written in looping strokes, carefully mapped and worded, and it is a poem he holds and kisses, a poem he holds and glances out the window and thinks that maybe, just maybe, it isn't a lost hope.

It is a poem that reads a thousand different meanings in three stanzas, a poem that denounces and proclaims everything in six lines, a poem that proves all is not lost in three couplets, that says England wants him and needs him and-- and-- loves him.

When he shows up at England's door, soaked and shaking with laughter and smiles, he doesn't expect to see England with his arms wrapped around the waist of France.

But he does, and he screams and cries and shakes the poem in England's face, watches the smile curl up into a sneer and green eyes lazily drift over the parchment with ink beginning to run from the rain.

“Did you really think I'd send that?”

Hopes shattered and heart broken, Spain collects the poem (and he knows it's England's handwriting) and leaves, masking tears with rain and despising this birthday as much as the last.
