Title: "the universe is my country!"
Characters: Masaki Sato, Chizuru Tachibana
Rating: G

111/365. pokemon au.

Masaki meets him while staying in Goldenrod City; he’s on a bike, evidently borrowed or stolen or whatever, and he crashes into the trash cans next to her, eliciting a scream from both her and Vulpy. The blond boy sits up, groaning, and assures her he’s okay. He talks a little fast, though, and he’s got a slight accent, and so the second she manages to get him to sit down she asks him where he’s from.

“Does it matter?” He asks, playing with a straw as they sit in the department store’s rooftop café. Masaki frowns and leans back, sipping her can of lemonade. “I asked, didn’t I? Anyway, you speak way weird. That’s why I want to know.”

“I come from the world,” he nearly sings, standing up; she spits her lemonade out and across the table, evoking a yell from her companion, and scowls at him. “Be serious! I’m from Ecruteak - it’s the city north of here. What about you?”

“Someplace far, far away. I moved to Olivine a month ago though. My parents let me go on this adventure though. Me and Mary are gonna beat the leaders and become Johto’s champion!”

Masaki nods slowly; it’s a dream she’s heard from a lot of trainers she’s met, but she’s not among that crowd herself. She leans down pet Vulpy, smiling at the feel of the short, warm fur on her fingertips, and nods again.

“Good luck with that. Morty’s actually really tough, even though he’s really nice.”

“What’s he use?” The boy leans forward, laying his head on his arms and watching her. Masaki furrows her brows and frowns, sitting back up and ignoring the small whine Vulpy gives from the sudden lack of attention.

“It says so right outside of the gym, idiot. You weren’t paying attention?” He shakes his head and she sighs, standing up to throw away her can and to peruse over the other choices. “He uses Ghost pokémon. Normal and fighting don’t work at all against them.”

“Ohhhh, all right. Thanks for the tip, Mary.”

“What did you just call me!?” She demands, the coins tumble out of her hand instead of into the machine and her turning on her heel to face him. The boy grins (infuriating!) and leans back in his chair, pushing off with one foot and trying to keep in balanced on two legs.

“Mary! You know, like Mary Had A Little Mareep? Your hair reminds me of one.” It doesn’t sate her anger and he rights himself, pulling a pokéball from his belt and letting out the pokémon inside. “See?”

The Mareep bleats quietly and presses against the boy, watching Masaki cautiously, and she shakes her head, turning back just enough to jam her coins in and get another lemonade. The boy’s grin falls and he leans back again, a pout sitting on his features.

“My name’s Masaki, not Mary. Don’t make up weird nicknames for people you don’t even know.” The boy blinks and starts to straighten up. “Masaki, huh? I’m Chi—”

She doesn’t get the rest of his name because she’s bolting down the stairs and sliding into the elevator as soon as she can manage, scooping up Vulpy when she comes racing down after her and pressing her face into the warm, soft fur of her partner. The strange boy’s out of her mind as soon as he’s out of sight, but she doesn’t stay much longer in Goldenrod City and sets her course for Azalea Town.
