For a few days after Kelm (fuck Hasta, fuck everything he stands for — if he stands for anything at all, aside from his ire and the bane of his existence) Spada waits until Luca’s asleep and sneaks over to his bed side, sits at the edge and hovers his fingers over Luca’s open mouth, feeling the breath slowly push against his fingers. He stays for a few minutes afterwards to make sure he’s not dreaming (he stays awake sometimes to avoid dreaming, sometimes, looking at the books his boy’s collected from every city and flipping through them, not really looking at the words but just having something for his hands to do) and that yes, Luca’s actually alive and he hasn’t failed him again (again). It’s stupid to do and he berates himself every night for it, but it’s not until Luca catches him that Spada lays on his hands and stares at the ceiling or at the stars instead of checking on him.
