Title: the end of a nightmare, but still in the middle of a dream
Characters: Luca Milda, Iria Animi
Rating: G

68/365. AU where Luca joins Arca when it first starts out.

"We know there's a Fallen here," he says, looking at the gathered villagers, "so please bring her to us. We're from Arca, an organization hoping to give shelter to those with unspeakable power. All of us are the same as her, so please, don't think she'll be hurt."

What he says and how the group of Arca members behind him must cause some dissonance; they're a rougher bunch of the group, hands more comfortable on the hilts of their weapons than folded peacefully in front of them, like his are. Luca bites his lip, looking into the crowd - this really was a small village, especially compared to Regnum - and tries to continue.

"We only seek Utopia, so --"

"That's a load of bull!"

The shout comes from the back of the crowd; Luca jerks his attention up at it and blinks, trying to discern the speaker. He doesn't have to; she makes her way through the crowd, pushing aside the people as well as pleading whispers of her villagers (and being the mayor's daughter, if they said right-- they had to be her villagers, right?) until she's standing before him, hands on her hips. She really is quite attractive, he thinks; pretty in an unconventional way, and he's sure he's met her somewhere before, but where--?

"I've heard from other people that you just take whoever you want to! How the hell are you going to achieve Utopia like that!?"

Luca flounders, stepping back as she steps forward; he licks his lips and tries to think of something to say, anything. He hadn't heard anything about that, and --

"With all due respect, miss, I don't know anything about that, and Lady Mathias sent me to find an Iria Animi-- Um, please don't shoot me."

The girl pauses out of drawing her guns from their holsters; the Arca members behind him have drawn their weapons as well, circling around them as she'd pushed him back. Luca swallows back the wetness in his mouth and raises his hands peacefully, suddenly wishing he had a hood like the others, or a mask like Lady Mathias. He opens his mouth to try again when suddenly there's a shout, followed by rocks raining down on them. The girl scowls and curses under her breath, turning an angry eye on him and drawing out her guns. The villagers keep up their assault; some leave and return with their own pistols, while others keep up their rock throwing. Luca motions to the members to leave, get back; they comply, pulling him with them.

They don't stop until they're out of sight of the village; Luca's panting, unused to running in the heat, and sits down. His group talks amongst themselves, giving him glances until finally one stands and approaches him. A young man, probably only a few years older than himself -- it still shocks him to realize he's only fifteen and commanding people older than him, and he sits up to try and look the leader he's supposed to be.

"Yes?"

"We believe the young woman who interrupted you was Iria Animi, sir." Luca frowns at this information and twists his hair around his figner, thinking. If she had been, then why had she resisted them--? It didn't make sense. What Avatar wouldn't want to be safe? He nods, though, and waits for the young man to continue.

"In light of that, the rest of us believe we should invade the village and take her with force." Luca jerks up at that, frowning.

"No. We're not going to --"

"Lady Mathias said to attain her at any cost," the young man speaks in level tones, as if talking to a child. "She evidently isn't going to listen to reason."

Luca frowns harder, pursing his lips. After a long moment he closes his eyes and shakes his head, laying back against the ground and keeping his voice firm.

"I'm aware of what Lady Mathias said, but we aren't going to use force."

The young man isn't satisfied - he can feel it - and he leaves Luca to his thoughts. Luca drifts off to sleep, and only awakes when he smells the scent of burning hosues carried on the wind. Most of his group is gone; only a few of the women remain, and they looked at him, alarmed, when he jumps up and draws his sword. Not minutes later, the group returns, looking sour and covered in ashes. Luca frowns at them and sheathes his sword, crossing his arms over his chest.

"I thought I said we weren't going to --"

"With all due respect, Luca," one says, stepping forward. "We only listen to the will of Lady Mathias." A pause, and she continues on. "The girl wasn't there anyway. She may have left after we departed earlier. It's likely she'll go to Regnum, as it's the largest city. It'd be wise to follow her."

"You can do that," he replies, sitting back down and staring forlornly at the ground. "I'll return to Lady Mathias myself and report our failure."

The members don't hesitate in settling down, although none of them make their bed close to him. That's perfectly fine; he's tired, more tired than he's ever been before, but he can't sleep as he watches the fire on the horizon grow as the night passes above him.
