Title: d is for danger
Rating: G
63/365. also for the alphabet writing exercise, with day four's prompt: d is for diary or danger. went with danger.
He can taste it in the stillness of the air; the fighting's stopped, although the clamor of bullets hitting shields and bodies falling to the floor still echo faintly in the halls, just further past the nursery. He crawls out from under the cradle, listening, then turns to scoop his baby sister out of her bed, tucking the blanket around her tightly and holding her against his chest. He wills her not to make a sound as he peeks out of the room and makes his way to the servants' quarters. It's safe there, although in need of cleaning, and he picks his way between the sticky spots of not quite dried blood on the grey tiled floors. Maddie's nowhere to be seen - not even in her room - and he tries to keep himself calm as he looks for the young nursemaid. Someone needed to take care of the baby, and it couldn't be him; at fifteen, the heir apparent of the king had no time to learn how to take care of one, much less a need to, and Maddie had always been better with children than he.
The sound of a door unlocking makes him freeze in his place; his sister stirs quietly, a small cry erupting from her lips, and he presses his finger to them to silence her. He crouches against the wall, behind a worn dresser, and watches a feminine figure step quietly into the room. Something is distinctly familiar about her, although it isn't until she reaches up to comb her fingers through the ends of her hair that he realizes it.
"Maddie!" He whispers urgently and tries not to grin when she jumps at her name. She frowns at him peeking around the corner of the dresser. "I'm glad you're safe."
"Haven't I told you to call me Maddison?" She chides him, making her way to him and taking his sister from his arms. He replies with a tight hug, feeling her stiffen then relax against him. "I'm glad you're safe too, Thomas. Amelia as well."
Amelia giggles in reply, and Maddie leans down to kiss the babe's nose. Their peace is short-lived, though; they hear the screams and shouts thundering through the halls and the sounds of rooms being broken into mercilessly, being scavenged despite the fact the servants weren't any richer than the vermin storming the castle. They climb out a window - Maddie always has hers open in the summertime because of the heat snaking around the corridors during the day - and flee the castle. The acrid smell of smoke follows them through the brush and bramble of the forest, and when they're out of breath they turn to look at the ruin of Raventide Castle, a burning beacon of the revolt that threatens to overturn their kingdom.
