Title: summer's touch
Characters: Masaki Sato, Chizuru Tachibana, Shun Matsuoka, Yuuta Asaba, Yuuki Asaba, Kaname Tsukahara
Rating: G
55/365. “a time and place” & “lotta stuff happens under the waterline”
It's the summer of her third year and, to be honest, it's probably the hottest summer on record. It feels it anyway, and she briefly considers cutting her hair. Chizuru, as it turns out, has a better idea; one morning, as she's sluggishly pulling herself from under the covers and wishing her mother would just turn on the air conditioner, her phone chimes. She reaches for it and doesn't give it a glance until she's in front of the mirror, toothbrush in hand.
Mary!! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ Good morning! Kaname's got a beach house and we're all going down to it since it's sooooooooooooo hot today! (/^▽^)/ Do you wanna come? I'm sure Shun-chan would be really happy to see you again!!! Actually, I think all of us would!! O(≧▽≦)O RSVP!!!
She thinks about it as she brushes her teeth; she thinks about it as she looks for a swimsuit and has to jog downstairs to ask her mother if they can go shopping for a new one. She replies to Chizuru's text on the way to the store (Sure.) and tries to keep her heart from pounding as the six of them group up at Kaname's house. Necessary beach supplies are gathered, as well as unnecessary ones (but considered necessary at everyone's insistence, including but not limited to food, drinks, food, volleyball, food, a DS, and food), and it's a crowded drive. Kaname's car only seats five comfortably, and Masaki's forced to either choose a lap to sit on or find some other way to the beach. Chizuru offers to take the bus with her and she accepts it – mostly on Shun's smile and promise that they'd see them there.
The ride is quiet; they hold hands so neither of them gets lost of the sea of people also bustling in to get to sandy shores and cool breezes, and she keeps as close as she can to him. Their arms eventually entwine, hands still linked, and she leans her cheek on his arm, closing her arms and trying to block out the hum and buzz of the people around them. It doesn't help that the bus is extraordinarily hot with everyone crowding together, and it's a breath of relief when they finally reach their destination and step off. The other boys are waiting for them at the station – there are no quiet smiles at the hand-holding, which Masaki slips away from and Chizuru brushes off with 'I didn't want to lose the sheep in a flock like we did at the festival a few years ago!' - and they set off for the changing rooms.
Masaki is, admittedly, a little shy about coming out; the two-piece had looked good in the dressing room earlier in the day, but now (in front of a mirror, alone) she wonders if she should've gone for something more flattering... or showing less skin. Two sharp knocks on the door remind her there are other girls waiting to change, and she slips out with her towel around her shoulders. She makes her way to where the boys are lounging and setting things up – towels on the sand, umbrellas above them, and sunscreen being liberally applied, especially to Chizuru, who they jeer and pick at for burning so easily because of his foreign skin – and settles down in the shade of one of the umbrellas. She refuses any help for putting on sunscreen and pulls the towel tighter around herself, scowling away comments about her flat chest and having to hide it, among other teases.
She only puts on the lotion once the boys are in the ocean, splashing and having a good time; she lets the towel slide off and slowly stands, trying not to attract attention as she does so, although when she starts applying it her attention wanders away from keeping a lookout and stays in covering every inch of skin she can reach. It's natural to jump when wet hands clamp down on her shoulders, and there's a very interested half-German looking over her shoulder with a look of mock surprise.
“Mary, have you been fattening yourself up just to get a pair of breasts? They're a lot bigger than the last time I saw you --”
“Of course they are, it's been months and the last time you saw me I was all bundled up!”
Chizuru laughs and lets go of her; the cool feeling dries quickly and she scowls at him over her shoulder, going back to working on the sunscreen. Without asking he does her back, chuckling away her attempts at swatting his hands away; he pulls her to the ocean and nearly tosses her into the oncoming wave, grin fading when she surfaces and looking like an angry, drenched cat. She tackles him into the sand and drags him kicking and yelling into the ocean, much to the amusement of their comrades, and all in all it turns out to be a day well-spent. They stay until the sun sets, then start to pack up; Kaname, Shun, and Yuuta do that much, with Yuuki in charge of collecting trash. They converse in quiet tones while Chizuru and Masaki finish collecting shells for souvenirs, fighting over the prettiest ones and throwing the uglier ones back out to sea. They make a game of it – who can throw the farthest? - and as expected, Chizuru wins. He has a better throwing arm, but that doesn't mean she has to like it, and they fight a little longer in the water (taking turns pinning each other to the wet sand and laughing triumphantly when the water rushes over the other's face and leaves them spluttering) before getting up to leave with the rest of the boys.
This time, Masaki ducks into the car first (much to Kaname's chagrin, which is dotted with anger and resignment to water getting all over his seats) and everyone else is quick to pile in. Chizuru's left standing outside the car until Shun offers his lap, and the bright-eyed young man takes it quickly, giving Masaki a grin and making a big show of thanking the kindest man in the car.
She doesn't mind it as much as she would've years ago. A little part of her heart still protests against it but, for the most part, the pout and frown she gives him are habit and habit alone, and the way she leans against him gives away the fatigue and relief she feels.
