21/365. Back to Naos we retreat.

"Look here, Spada! It's map of Devaloka... I wonder how old this is? And here's a book written in Devic! ...I can't read any of it..."

Spada leans against the bookshelves and groans, laying an arm over his eyes. He peeks out from under it to see Luca pulling books off shelves carefully, inspecting their contents and then laying them down. Those weren't even ones relevant to what they were supposed to be looking for, if the words Luca mutters to himself as he reads were any indication.

Why'd he have to get stuck with the bookworm, of all people?

Luca sets aside another book and stands, glancing over just as Spada straightens up and stretches.

"I told you, I don't do books. You seem pretty happy here though. You wanna stay a while longer?"

Luca bites his lip and Spada can tell that he does, but he shakes his head and fingers the spine of a book.

"...We can't. I've already found the information we're supposed to be looking for, so I guess we're done here." He pauses uneasily and shakes his head again. "Sorry. I, um, I know you're not really... into this sort of stuff... so listening to me prattling on must've really got on your nerves..."

"Yeah, it did." Luca flinches and Spada rolls his eyes. "Damn, loosen up already. You like books and stuff, right? It's nice to see there's somethin' you ain't afraid of."

Luca smiles a little and starts to put away books in their proper place, counting along the rows and fitting them where they should be. For a long while, the only sounds are books being shifted back into place and their covers clunking quietly against the back as Luca makes sure they're nice and snug, and Spada's beginning to yawn again when Luca decides to speak up again, soft and a little hesitant in his words.

"I've loved books since I was a kid. They didn't tease me or bully me or anything like that, and they weren't loud or obnoxious... They always smelled nice too. I guess they remind me a lot of home. Mother and Father were big readers too," and his voice cracks, just a little, and Spada doesn't know whether or not he'd like to punch him or sling an arm around his shoulders to shake it out of his voice, "so it wasn't like there was a shortage of books. Father enjoyed non-fiction a lot more, though."

He shelves the last book into place (somewhere close to the ground, kneeling to reach it and make sure everything's straight) and stands up, brushing off his trousers and turning to face Spada.

"We should get back, right? Let's go."

Luca swiftly walks down the aisle before Spada has a chance to comment; it makes him frown and pick at the edges of the books behind him, glancing at the world of knowledge Luca adores and shake his head. There's no reason to envy him, and he doesn't let his mind dwell on it before he follows after and tries not to groan at them being the first ones back.
