12/365. dduuumbshit high school au.

Luca's not paying attention at all in class; he's staring at the book hidden on his lap, rolling his pencil idly between his thumb and index fingers, casually turning the page with his elbow as if he's done it before (and he has) while pretending to scratch the back of his neck. He jumps right to attention, though, when he hears the teacher call his name, and when he looks up –

there's the cutest girl standing in front of class, with red hair and peculiarly matching eyes and she's frowning a little. Luca knows what's asked of him (there's been an empty seat next to him for the last three months) so he raises his hand and feels his heartbeat speed up when she makes her way down the aisle and slides into the seat next to him. He lowers his hand slowly and watches her-- ducks his head when she catches him and scratches out a few (already present) answers on his worksheet and sneaks glances at her for the rest of class.

“Iria Animi,” he announces to Spada after school; Spada looks up from eating his sandwich with a questioning look and Luca can't help but bounce on his heels a little. “There's a new girl in my language class and she's from way out east, like in those movies and dime novels, and her name's Iria Animi and she's really cute. She sits next to me... We have a lot of other classes in common too, and she has gym when I have lunch.”

“So you've been checkin' her out while she runs?”

“-- I-I didn't say that!”

“...But you are, right?”

Luca flushes a guilty pink and Spada grins, shoves him away a little and takes another bite, not even waiting to finish chewing before he starts talking.

“I was beginnin' to wonder about you, man! It's good you've got a girl to like. How's her figure?”

“I'm not sure that she'd be your type, if that's what you're asking. And don't talk when you have food in your mouth, that's disgusting.”

“You're such a priss, Luca. Loosen up a little. How're you gonna get a girlfriend if you don't?”

“...Girls aren't you, Spada.”

“Would you date me if I was?”

It's– an admittedly sudden question, and Spada looks a little serious about it; Luca feels his stomach drop harder than a bass and he steps to the side, watching Spada from the corner of his eye. The immediate answer on his mind is yes because Spada would still be Spada, but something about that feels weird; it feels off and he figures it has something to do with the fact that it implies he'd date Spada now, even, as a guy and– he shakes his head quietly to himself, not sure how to answer and hoping that Spada'll just tell him to forget it.

But he doesn't; he keeps on looking and Luca keeps on being silent. It's a war of attrition and, with a sigh, Luca gives out first.

“I... guess. You'd still be my friend first and foremost though, so I'm not sure I'd want to mess that up, but...”

“You wouldn't be anythin' amazin', but I'd probably date you if you were a chick, too.”

It's said so nonchalantly that Luca looks at Spada like a deer caught in headlights; when he doesn't hear a reprisal of the confession he turns his eyes away and focuses on the softly waving branches of a far-off tree. Maybe he had just imagined it; he was sure that he had. Maybe not the first part, but the dating– yes, he had to have imagined that. It's quiet between the two of them until Spada finishes his sandwich and wipes his hands on Luca's jacket, which Luca (nigh instantaneously) shouts at and brushes the crumbs off, eliciting a laugh on the former's part; Spada slips an arm around Luca's shoulder and presses their faces close, eyes narrowed slyly.

“So, when're you gonna ask her out?”

Luca garbles out a reply – not even a number or words, just a string of sounds that mean something like ask her out how would I do that spada please I couldn't don't suggest that sort of thing we don't even know each other yet she just sits beside me in class and we've talked for all of five minutes asking her out is out of the question.
