Title: songs
Characters: Chizuru Tachibana, Masaki Sato
Rating: G
Sometimes, when they're together, Masaki'll hear him hum and sing little songs under his breath; it sounds nice, but the words are soft and she can't always make them out nor the tune, and she'd never ask him to sing a little louder - nor would she ever let him catch her watching his lips, trying to decipher the lyrics (although he does catch her eye once or twice and turn a faint red, a sheepish smile starting to pull at his lips instead of the sounds and she always scowls and turns her heard, concentrating on making shadow puppets with her hands, or pretending to read a book). Every so often he'll whisper the words a little louder, but it's only for a note until he drops back down again.
It's actually a little irritating, and she tells him so one day. He responds by shrugging and continuing on - which irks her a little, because she's half-disappointed that he didn't start to sing louder, half-mortified that she'd want to hear him sing louder. Chizuru laughs at the expression on her face (she can feel a frown crease her forehead and her lips press together, unsatisfied with his actions) and teases her gently. If she just wanted to hear him sing, then why didn't she just say so? The question makes her blood boil a little and she retorts angrily; who says I wanted to hear you sing?
Chizuru blinks and-- there's a little something of sadness in his posture and in the way his lips twitch, just a little, but it's gone before Masaki has a chance to think too long on it; it's replaced by a grin that stretches wide, all the way across his face, and an arm slips (nervously) nonchalantly around her shoulders. He pauses before he speaks (taking in the scent of her and knowing he'll never be this close again), the teasing, jabbing tone back.
"You just sounded like it."
And then he sings, low and warm, into her ear, and it's-- it isn't bad at all, but he skips around the song, and she realizes it's only the chorus he's singing and humming the other verses. She shoves him away and steps a few beats ahead, glancing over her shoulder to frown at him and shake her head.
"You're not bad, but you should learn the whole song. The chorus is annoying just by itself."
Not bad is an understatement (her heart beats a little faster when his voice dips into the lower notes and soars with the higher ones) but it's all she can say, but it's enough; Chizuru looks as happy as a lit-up fir tree, and he stretches, singing louder - except instead of a song, he's just singing his words.
"But the chorus is the fun pa~art! The one ev'ry-one kno~ows! Meh-ry~!"
When Chizuru sings that stupid nickname he's got for her, Masaki feels shivers run down her spine (and not in a bad way-- no, definitely in a bad way) and she shoves into him once he gets close enough. They keep on this shoving game until it's time to part, and she doesn't look back when he sings good bye to her; she just walks faster, trying to match her footsteps with the beating of her heart (the rhythm of the song he sings, quick and light and confused).
