Title: the trail marked on your father's map
Characters: Linna, Eco, and Belca
Rating: G

For my sweetheart, Rinna. ♥

"Belca, c'mon! Hurry up! Orhaldi and I are gonna leave you behind if you don't hurry up~"

"Shut up! Your stupid map can wait two seconds!"

"Y'know if you didn't eat so much, you'd move a little faster!"

Linna observes this exchange, sighs, and wonders if he should do something about it.

It's a small break from what they'd been doing previously - a stop on the way to the capital for the night, and in the dark, dew-ladened, chilly morning Eco had woken them all up and shown them an old map he'd bought a year or two back (or so he said). It was detailed, weathered, and had a simple path drawing by dotted lines to an X on the map. Eco grinned and said it was treasure, and that they should go find it while the morning was young, and for Belca not to give him that face because they'd be back in time to keep moving, okay? Eco's a charming, persuasive man, Linna's found; even with protests and grumbles from His Highness, they still went along with it.

It's much later, bordering on the afternoon (though it doesn't feel any different from the morning), and they still haven't found anything. Belca's getting testier and testier with every failed step, and Eco's turning the map every which way with a little frown, and it really has been Belca's dragging, unwilling steps that's been slowing them down.

"We're not going to find anything, Eco! Can't we just move on? We can't be late to the investure ceremony!"

"What? We have plenty of time! And don't be so grumpy either, it's ten paces north north-west, and--"

"You've said that the past thirty steps!"

"We've been doing steps? We're supposed to be doing pace--"

"Eco."

Belca looks as if he's about to snap an axel, so Linna steps in and takes the map from Eco. It's quiet for a moment as he studies it, then the surroundings, and he smiles a little as he turns east.

"You had it upside down, Sir Eco. We've gotten thirty paces west of where it is. Your Highness, if you're tired, I'll carry you."

"You don't have to do anything like that. Eco, are we--?"

Eco grabs Belca's hand, grabs the map, and yanks him east. Linna follows after them as quick as he can through the trees, and they're back at their camp when it's all said and done. Eco's peturbed, and so's Belca, and the young prince is about to starting fussing at the blond bard again when they notice something off about the dirt.

It's a little higher than the rest of the ground, and the grass is a little lighter, and Eco grins and gets to digging. He's streaked with mud and dirt by the time he's finished, sleeves rolled up to his elbows and the coachman's suit folded aside. There's patches of dirt and grass on the usual cream shirt he has on, but he doesn't notice it as he pulls out a small, worn box out of the ground.

"Didn't I say we'd find it, Belca?"

His voice is soft, awed by actually finding it; Belca scowls but kneels down, just as Eco starts to lift the latch and lift the top of it off. The treasure is nothing special; it's a crisp white rose that Eco hands off to Belca, along with a gold signet ring Eco studies for a long, long while before tucking it away in between his hands and not mentioning it when they settle for the night.

He does mention another map, and before he can get Belca's curiousity going the prince retires to bed, scowling and almost diving into his tent.
