Title: all that we see or seem
Characters: Soul, Maka
Rating: G
As the curtain falls, the auditorium erupts into applause. He sits back from the piano, closes his eyes, and lets it wash over him.
Switch.
The light flickers in the dim white room. A doctor smiles above him, raises his scalpel, and proclaims, "We're ready to begin!"

Waxy green hands slide up, accompanying a sudden, stifling waxy, rotting smell. The curtains close just as the hand grabs his foot, and he can feel the maggots begin to burrow into his--
Switch.
He sits up and immediately clutches his ankle, feeling it carefully. Beside him, Maka stirs, and for a while the only sound is his breath hitting the air like a hammer on hot steel. Soul grits his teeth and lets go of his ankle, slipping back down onto his pillow and closing his eyes. He feels Maka sit up, and he peeks open an eye to look at her.
"You okay?"
He doesn't mean to worry her, so he offers a small grin filled with shark's teeth and turns on his side, away from her.
"Yeah. I'm fine. Go back to sleep."
She yawns and falls back beside him, turning so her back is pressed to his.
"'kay. Night, Soul."
He grunts noncommittally and doesn't sleep, despite his closed eyes; he feels her breath even out, and keeps watch until dawn peeks through the curtains, and the sun hovers just below the horizon.
