Title: Bedtime - Lullaby
Characters: Eco, Belca
Rating:D, for diabetes G
Another for Rinna. The song used is "A Lullaby in Ragtime", which one can listen to here.
"Has anyone ever sung you to sleep?"
Belca opens his eyes then immediately narrows them into slits, enough to block out the too bright lamp light and enough to see Eco, who smiles and waits on his answer.
"...My mother used to. Why?"
"I was just wondering. I guess that years ago, huh..."
Eco leans back, thankfully taking the lamp with him and setting it a little farther away. Belca sits up, loosely wraps his arms around his knees as he brings them up, too, and closes his eyes. Eco starts humming, and he can almost feel the familiar tune wash over him.
Won't you play the music so the cradle can rock,
to a lullaby in ragtime.
Sleepy hands are creeping to the end of the clock,
"--play a lullaby in ragtime..."
It's a moment too late that Belca realizes he's started singing it time with Eco's hum; it just makes the bard grin and push him down. He lets Eco tuck him in, looking for all the world like the grumpy teenager he is, scrunches his nose when Eco kisses his cheek good night, and watches (feeling more than a little awkward) when the bard reaches for his lute, puts it into tune by ear, and starts to sing,
"You can tell the sandman is on his way,
by the way that they play,
As still as the trill of a thrush in a twilight high.
So you can hear the rhythm of the ripples on the side of the boat,
as you sail away to dreamland.
High above the moon you hear a silvery note,
as the sandman takes your hand."
The lute's notes aren't exactly in the same pitch as he's used to - then again, Eco's voice isn't the same pitch - but it makes him sleepy nonethless, and he's too tired to berate himself on getting lullabied into sleep. The last thing he sees is Eco with his eyes closed, voice soft and gentle, music reflecting the moment in everywhere; then, he sleeps, and dreams of a ragtime lullaby.
