Title: Open Sky
Characters: Eco, Belca
Rating: G
Cowboy AU. I blame Rinna for this.
The night sky is dark and wide above them, dotted with a million specks of light. The campfire casts a glow, and the can of beans hanging above it bubbles with their dinner too excitedly. Across from him, Eco tunes his guitar, humming a few bars under his breath. Belca sits back, stares at the stars, and wonder how he got himself tangled up with one of the most sought-after, if admittedly friendly, outlaws. It's hard to think, staring at such a happy face, that Eco is actually dangerous, but Belca knows well enough; he rubs his sore throat, covered with faint bruises from awful slim fingers for a man, and groans.
"Is dinner done yet? I'm starving."
"I reckon it'll be done in a few minutes, partner!"
Belca gives Eco a long, suffering look and it only tightens into a glare that could make tumbleweeds wither when the outlaw laughs.
"Do you have to talk like that? It's annoying."
"But it sure is cute, right?"
"Not really."
"You're just no fun, Belca."
He rolls his eyes and sits up, peeking into the cane of beans and flinching away when Eco jabs at his eye with a spoon. Belca scowls, and Eco pouts at him.
"Now you just wait a darn tootin' second there! We gotta take it off the fire first, or we'll get burned!"
"I know that! I was just checking to see if it was ready!"
Eco waves the spoon at him again and stirs the beans, carefully lifting it off and handing Belca another spoon. Belca gives it a wary look, cleans it between his forefinger and the bottom of his shirt, and scoops out some. He stares at the brown, sticky lump, and shoves it into his mouth.
Sweetness and fire mix in his mouth, and he hurriedly reaches for his canteen, dousing it with water. Across from him, Eco laughs so hard he's crying. It's becoming apparent that the phrase 'if looks could kill' isn't becoming literal anytime soon as Belca sends heated glares at Eco, which prompts him to laugh even harder. He wipes the tears from his eyes after a few minutes, trying to catch his breath while chuckles still leak out. Belca waits patiently, fingers gripping his spoon and the can of beans tightly.
"Are you finished?"
"Haha... Ha... Whoo... Yep. You should really blow on them before you stick them in, you know, they were fresh off the fire."
"Shut up. Here."
Eco takes the can offered, scoops some out, and hums as soon as the sweet and porky flavor hits his tongue.
They eat silently for a few minutes until they're scraping the bottom of the can, passing it over the fire between them. Eco sighs contentedly; Belca silently laments that he couldn't get more. After a pause, the only sound now being the howls of coyotes and the crackling of the fire, Eco shuffles his way to Belca's side of the fire and lays down beside him, pulling his brown cowboy hat off and laying it on his chest as he fixes himself to look at the stars. The ends of the ribbons on the hat tickle Belca's nose, and he scrunches his nose at them.
He only catches the last half of Eco's question - "...ever see this many stars in the city?" - and shrugs, scratching the back of his neck from the dust.
"Not really. Too many lights. It's pretty, I guess."
"I love looking at the sky. It's the best part about sleeping out here. And the sunrise is even better! To see it peekin' over them mesas over yonder is a real sight."
Belca twitches his lips at the turn of phrase halfway through the reply and sighs, turning on his side and towards the fire.
"Whatever, weird guy. Get some rest. We're heading off in a few hours."
He feels Eco shift and feels his back pressing against his; a long exhale, and he feels the breathing even out into long, shallow strokes. Belca tries to make himself as comfortable as one can on the flat, dirt ground, and settles into an uneasy sleep.
