Title: A Blind Eye Is Better Than None
Characters: Eco, Belca
Rating: PG
Discourage me from writing these two more.
What wakes him up is the feeling of someone leaning against his back. He shifts and nudges the body away with his elbow.
"Knock it off, Eco, I'm trying to sleep."
"You're warm."
The voice is right next to his ear, and he almost smashes his head into Eco's face trying to get up. Eco jerks away in time, sitting up and letting the blankets pool around his waist. Belca rubs the back of his neck, grits his teeth, and sends his best glare at the bard. It bounces off like rubber. Eco grins, and Belca shakes his head, tired. He lays back down, and Eco scoots closer, arms wrapping around his waist and chin resting on his shoulder.
Belca feels a little weird - and that's a major understatement - like this. Eco seems completely comfortable. After a moment, the hands slip up his sides - Belca starts to open his mouth to yell - and rest over his eyes. He sees darkness through darkness, and Eco's breath is hot on his ear.
"They say Justice is blind. What do you think?"
"I think you should let me sleep."
"But there's no fun in answering questions that way! Come on, tell me~"
Belca scowls and turns around, ready to say something - Eco's so close, violet eyes not two inches from his, and their noses bump and his breath catches and Eco laughs at Belca's wide-eyed surprise, like a child caught stealing a cookie from the cookie jar. The prince squirms to get away, out of the bard's arms and off the bed, and looks like a scorned cat glaring up at him. Eco grins, extends a hand, and isn't surprised when Belca knocks it away and crawls back into bed.
"So?"
"What?"
"The question. What do you think Justice is?"
"It doesn't matter. Go to sleep."
Eco huffs and turns away; he turns back around as soon as Belca starts to drift off. Fingers cover his eyes in a childish, playing manner, but the prince doesn't care; he can't see anything with his eyes closed anyways. Eco's fingerpads are calloused from the sharp strings of his lute, and Belca can feel the different cuts and over-grown scars that minimally decorate them. Blind like this, every sense is heightened; he's not sure he likes it.
Especially when he can feel Eco's words before he hears them; a slow rumble, like a laugh, behind him on the bed.
"Please answer?"
"Doesn't that just mean it's impartial?"
"Yeah, but Justice seems to be turning a blind eye to Hect--"
Before Eco can ever finish the name, Belca's pinning his hands down, straddling his waist. He's furious - his eyes betray it, along with hurt in the murky depths. He's still sore about losing his brother, Eco knows, so he smiles gently and wiggles his fingers. Two beats pass this time, then Belca collapses to the side, pulls all the blankets to his side, and leaves Eco in the cold.
