Title: The Lusty Young Nobleman (Now and Then: A Comparison of A Solid and A Liquid)
Characters: Eco, Belca
Rating: PG-13
For Rinna. Told you I'd write something about it!!! Also for her deceased computer NEVER FORGET. Note: The title doesn't actually mean anything re: the story, I just love making long titles like that.
When Eco sings, it's like a bird's song; a little high, a little low, very quirky, very him. His voice changes its tone for different songs - a little sweeter for love songs, a little bolder for the tales of legends, a little sadder for tragedy. He's never really listened to Eco sing (aside from that song about the bread-- that was a fun tune, swelling with amusement) and it definitely surprises him when a young man requests something a bit on the dirty side and Eco's lips quirk up. His voice takes on a sultry tone, and Belca almost spills his drink jerking up to stare at the blond bard.
The pub roars with laughter, and Belca sinks into his seat. Eco flashes him a grin and picks out an entirely new tune, humming to himself.
"You know, that reminds me... Do you remember the prince there was that big ruckus about a few days ago? It's said after he escaped Sana, he found his way into the Earl of Arlon's manor. There he met a pretty lass, with milky thighs and round, red lips. He lost his head when she gave him head, and slept they did in the Earl of Arlon's bed!"
Belca does spill his drink then, standing up abruptly and crossing the short distance to grab Eco's arm and yank him up and away, spilling gold coins from a hat beside Eco onto the ground.
"--Wait, Belca! The money!"
"I can pay for whatever later!"
He keeps going until they're outside and in an alley; as soon as they're amongst the wet cobblestones and walls, he lets go of Eco's arm and grits his teeth.
"What the hell were you thinking, Eco?"
"Belca, there was a whole lot of money and --"
"Who cares?! I told you not to put my name in -- one of those kinds of songs!"
"What-- I didn't! All I did was say that there was a prince!"
"Everyone knows about the Prince Belca who supposedly escaped Sana, Eco!"
Eco smiles, and Belca presses his hand to his forehead. God, this guy was so embarrassing. -- And almost as if the bard knows he's thinking about him, he's cornering Belca between himself and the wall. The air's a little more serious, and Eco's voice doesn't quite have the same sing-songyness it usually has, and Belca can't help but feel perplaxed at how the mood can change so swiftly.
"I said I'd tell everyone your story, right? That I'd have everyone hear your song?"
-- And then seriousness is gone, replaced with cheer --
"Even if it means tweaking it just a little to fit those dirty guys in the pub! All they ever wanna hear are those kinds of songs~"
Belca closes his eyes for a second, takes a deep breath, and opens one back up. Two can play at a game of tone; his is dry now, and it irritates him to see Eco smile wider at it.
"I thought your songs were supposed to be about the truth?"
"Hmm, yeah, but I told you! They wouldn't have listened unless there was some sort of dirtiness to it~"
"Just... don't do it again, okay?"
Eco doesn't reply yes or no; he just shrugs, takes Belca's hand, and pulls him back towards the bar.
("We need to get that money!" is Eco's explanation when Belca asks him why they were going back there.)
