Title: Cause and effect

For 30smiles' prompt 'Cause and consequence'.
‘Cause and consequence,’ Spain used to say, ‘is the root of everything.’
England didn’t quite know what that meant, when he said it in such a soft voice and such a tender light.
Sitting on his beaches and gazing across the Channel, fingers idly playing with seashells and sand, he thought he understood now.
The cause was his King; the consequence was the Anglican Church, headed by his King.
The cause was the Anglican Church; the consequence was a war with Spain.
The cause was a war with Spain; the consequence was eager touches to bring him back.
Well, he thinks, he wasn’t going to go back without a fight. He’d sooner be crushed underfoot than be under the Catholic Church again. He didn’t care about what Spain thought – or felt, or liked, or disliked, or anything like that. So he stands, brushes the sand off the back of his legs, and jams a smart hat that that Boleyn girl had given him as a present.
He thinks he can see Spain across the expanse of water, watching him with betrayed eyes and a hurt pride, knees to his chest and a castle of sand built around him. He gives the image a two fingered salute and heads back to London.
It wouldn’t do to make his new Queen wait.
