Title: a little proposal
Characters: Katniss Everdeen, Aligula
Rating: G
Katniss is on the edge of sleep when, to no one's surprise at all, Aligula calls her name. She hums in acknowledgement, blinking the tiredness out of her eyes.
"Do you wanna get married?" she asks, flippant as ever, and she finds she's not exhausted anymore. Aligula's not looking at her—she's sitting up, watching the window instead, and she's sort of pretty in the moonlight. Katniss gradually sits up, pressing her back against the headboard as Aligula's fingers start tapping on her thigh.
She's not sure if it's impatience or nervousness. Probably impatience; she's known Aligula for a long time, and the girl just doesn't understand what nervous is.
"What brought this on," she replies after a long moment, not really answering the question, and Aligula huffs—she's aware of it, and Katniss is sure she'll hear an earful of it in a moment, but knowing why is important to her.
"Just curious." Aligula turns and flops against her, arms wrapping around her middle, and pouts. "Soooo? What's your answer, Katniss?"
"...Maybe sometime." It's weird to admit, but it's there, now that she's thinking about it, and disappointment shifts weirdly onto Aligula's face before it's replaced by her usual excited grin.
"So you are a normal girl! That's, like, totally a relief!" She giggles, pressing her face into Katniss's shoulder; they calm quicker than usual, lacquered fingernails tracing skin instead. "...I was totally proposing to you, though. You're such a dumb-dumb."
"You're a dumb-dumb for thinking I'd accept," Katniss retorts, heart skipping beats it really shouldn't, and Aligula squeezes her tighter with a soft I'm not joking. She hesitates until Aligula relaxes again, back to tracing shapes, and stares at the wall across from her quietly.
Marriage. Marriage to Aligula.
"We should probably try dating first," she mutters before the ticking of the clock above their heads drowns out her thoughts completely. "How's that sound?"
"We've practically been dating this entire time," Aligula replies immediately, but she presses her cheek against her collarbone and smiles. "Buuut okay, we'll date first. And then we'll get married."
"If dating works out—"
"Which it totally will!"
Katniss stares at her, stomach twisting, and closes her eyes with a sigh; the next moment, she's struggling not to smile when Aligula leans up enough to peck her on the lips, squirming away before Katniss can retaliate with a push.
