childhood friends au.

It's nerve-wracking enough to venture down the long road that leads to the Macbeth household in the daytime, when he can see heat rising off of the beaten path; at dusk, everything is longer, warning him away and coloring the ground in dark shadows. Leo trudges on despite this, keenly aware of his hands shaking in his jacket's pockets. It's still a little too warm for it, but he knows it gets cold quick up here; he's spent every summer since he was ten here, after all. Six years of the same scenery helps his memory.

After half an hour, the two-story cottage comes into sight. Leo pauses for a moment, leaning against a cobblestone wall; the lights are on, giving the area a beautifully warm and happy glow. He wonders if the twins are okay, given the state of affairs they'd come into recently. He swallows hard, forcing his legs to move, and smiles at their old dog on the porch as he steps up. The dog stirs enough to look at him and wag his tail, settling back into sleeping after a moment.

That's probably a sign, isn't it? A good one. Leo takes a deep breath and listens to the soft chatter inside, then raises his fist and bangs on the door twice.

The chatter immediately ceases; he hears someone moving to the door, and—oh thank goodness, it's Mary that answers. Leo can see Will peering over her shoulder from the back of the room, expression a mix of concern and relief, and—he doesn't know if that's a good thing. Leo fidgets in the doorway, licking his lips before he speaks.

"Hi, Mary. I, uh, wanted to ask you something?"

"So you walked all the way here?" She sounds amused at least, despite the tremble in her tone, and he laughs. (It's probably a little too loud, a little too awkward. Damn him.) "You couldn't have asked over the phone or something?"

"Well I—I mean, I'd have to come over here anyway if you said yes—" Mary's face lights up curiously; Leo chokes on his words and ignores the Cheshire grin slowly spreading across Will's face in the background. He swallows hard, shifting on his feet, and clears his throat. "I—Do you—er."

"Spit it out already," Mary laughs, raising a hand to cover her mouth, and Leo thinks he falls in love with her a little more.

It makes asking a little easier, too.

"Want to watch the stars with me?"

He thinks he sees her eyes shine a little, and when she turns to Will—probably to ask if he wants to come, too—he tosses her a light jacket and makes a shooing motion. Leo gives him a smile, which Will returns with a thumbs up as soon as Mary's back is turned, and Leo takes her hand and pulls her out into the dimming light before she can ask about the redness of his face.

The stars are starting to come out by the time they reach an edge of the island; the grass feels nice against their tired legs, and aside from the faint sounds of the night, it's quiet. Mary murmurs quietly about how nice the night is—it's been cloudy the past couple, as is usual for Scotland—and Leo agrees, watching her and the smile that seems fixed on her lips. It's not dark enough to see every star, even out here (the Highlands have that bad habit of being high enough that it's never completely dark, but dressed in ever-present twilight when the sun goes down), but there's enough darkness to see the brightest ones, and enough light that his eyes adjust quickly enough so he can watch Mary's smile stretch wider and wider under the crescent moon's watchful eye.

It's also light enough that when Mary turns to face him and leans in, he's not caught by surprise, and he can see the redness on her face when she pulls away from their kiss, whispering words of gratitude as he thinks about the warmth he'd felt from her cheeks in that moment.
