Title: without words
Characters: Leonardo Watch, Black, White
Rating: G
It's always been difficult to find someone willing to date the dumb. Mary gives him a look when he signs this to her—"Don't call yourself that, Will."—and he sighs, fidgeting in his seat. Speed-dating isn't his idea of a good time; there's a lot of speaking that needs to be done, a lot of interpreting on Mary's end, and it usually takes longer than the fifteen minutes to really get to know someone when it comes to him.
They only have fifteen, though. Mary's gotten three real dates from being his interpreter, all with smiles pointed at her; they're not for him, and he wants to shrink as person #5 takes a seat. He's a good-looking youth who can't be much older than either of them, with tousled brown hair and a grin that makes his heart skip a little. The grin slowly slips into a confused smile as he looked between the two of them, obviously trying to decide who it is he's supposed to be talking to, and Will swallows hard.
Mary motions to him and smiles. "This is Will! He's mute, so I'll be interpreting for him. That's fine, right?"
There's an edge to her voice that she's always had when it came to him; the young man seems a little stunned, but he nods and holds out his hand to him. Will stares for a moment, then gently takes it and gives it a little shake.
His hands return to his lap, and his partner introduces himself as Leo—Leonardo, really, but everyone calls him Leo.
They take turn asking questions, though it's more apt to say he settles his fingers on numbers and Mary reads them out in a cheerful voice, pausing to let Leo answer and ask his own in an easy-going manner. He keeps his gaze on Will's hands as they gesture in the air to his sister, and despite normal people not knowing how to read sign language—generally—it makes him self-conscious. Mary laughs when he tells her so, turning back to Leo with a cheeky smile on his face.
"You're making my brother nervous with all the staring," she says, which is not exactly what he said. It's close enough that he can't refute it, but his ears burn at the wording anyway, and Leo matches alongside his laugh.
"Oh, sorry, I just—think it's kind of cool? It must've taken a while to learn how to do it."
Will stares, then shakes his head; Mary giggles, propping her chin on her hands.
"He's been talking like that all his life, and I've learned to speak it! It wasn't hard at all, actually, since I had my mom and dad to practice with then too."
"Are you the only one who's mute in your family?" Leo asks; it startles Will a bit, because it isn't is he the only one, it's addressed specifically to him.
He doesn't get a chance to answer past a nod before the timer rings; both of them jump, with Mary hiding a grin behind her hands, and she holds out one of them to Leo.
"Give me your number and we can all hang out again! You and Will looked like you were having fun."
Will gives her a pained look that she pointedly ignores, and Leo scribbles it out on a piece of paper before he gets up; he gives them a wave, eyes flicking back to Will for a moment longer than his sister, and Mary leans against him as Leo leaves. Will reaches for the number, studying it, and tucks it into his shirt pocket.
