You step off the stage and shake the heat from your limbs. A few band members from the opening act smile at you and you do your best to give them one that isn’t tired as hell. All you want to do is get back to your bed and sleep off your soreness, but the boss told you you had to sign autographs tonight. One night, princess — that’s what he said. You fix your wig, straighten your skirts, and think happy thoughts.

Or try to. It’s a lot harder after performing a song and dance you hadn’t perfected yet but had to do anyway. It wasn’t your fault you got caught up with school and saving the world from the moon.

(It’s a good game, okay.)

You idly fix yourself up again, take a deep breath, and step out. The cheers of people waiting blasts you full-force and you smile at them. Your fans. They’re pretty cute - most of them are girls - and make your way through a security-forced hallway. When you sit down, the line surges forward and you try not to show your nervousness. You’ve been at this for almost six months now and still hadn’t gotten used to how vicious crowds could be.

They’re all the usual names and girls though, and you sign every slowly and give half a mind to every question you answer. Until a man’s voice, somewhat nervous, shakes you out of your forced distraction. He jerks his tie nervously and shoves forward a poster of you; it looks new, and you try not to quirk at him. Men, especially older ones like him, weren’t rare per say, but they never entered lines for autographs, especially not in front of hundreds of angry young women demanding him to hurry up and move it so they could see Shouko-chan.

You ask him name and he laughs, shaking his head.

“It’s not for me, it’s for my boss’s daughter. Uh— her name’s Nanako. Dojima Nanako. He would’ve gotten it for her, but the department called him off during half of the show and I got stuck with watching her.”

You look around for a little girl and frown at not seeing one. He holds up his hands, like he’s afraid you’re going to barrage him with questions. Well, good. You were about to, but he starts talking again.

“Hey, I didn’t just leave her alone! She’s with some pretty responsible kids from the high school nearby. Actually, maybe I should get your autograph for that Hanamura kid too… He seemed pretty into you.”

You laugh and sign it for Nanako, then ask if he has anything else to sign. He shakes his head and smiles— something’s off about it, but you can’t place it so you shove it out of your mind. You’re tired and he must be, too, if he’s had to watch a kid all show.

“Thanks a lot. She’s gonna love it. Oh, and hey, I don’t think you’re too bad either.”

With that and a final wave, he moves out of the way — and the girls surge forward again, fighting for your attention.

You wish you had asked for his name, because you’re beginning to miss his joking company more than you thought you would.
