Title: december
Characters: Elizabeth, Protagonist
Rating: G
Her voice quivers, and he wonders if it's just the natural noise made by long-distance phones or if there's something else. "Excuse me, but I'd like to spend a little time with you. I'm sorry this hasn't been put into a formal request, but --"
"It's fine, Elizabeth." He leans against his wall, a small smile making its way onto his lips. "Do you want me to come get you?"
"If you wouldn't mind," she answers, and there's a hint of-- relief? He shrugs, then bids her good night and shrugs on his jacket.
She's waiting for him in the alleyway, fingers tight around a bag. A smile alights in her eyes when she spots him and he allows himself the pleasure of returning it. He liked all the girls he spent time with - he wouldn't spend time with them if he didn't, after all - but there was something special with Elizabeth. Maybe it was because she was there solely to help him. Maybe it was because she never asked him for anything aside from company.
Maybe it was because her ignorance of the world was pretty endearing at times, if a little embarrassing.
At Elizabeth's request, they make their way to one of the more secluded parts of Iwatodai - Naganaki Shrine. The horizontal bar is their perch, and Elizabeth balances on it with ease, while he struggles to find an easy way to sit. She's quiet, watching the fog that drifts out of her mouth when she breathes, and he half wonders if she was just going to stay like that --
"It is a tradition to give those you care about a gift on Christmas, is it not?"
Her question jerks him out of thought and he shrugs, slipping his hands into his pockets and silently congratulating himself on balancing without them. Elizabeth glances at him, then looks down at the bag in her hands.
"I know there is a lot going on at the moment. This part of your journey may become your roughest. I'm not sure if I'd be able to govern such a choice as you do." She pulls the bag onto her lap and pushes down the plastic. The glitter and shine of a wrapped box reveals itself and she pushes it towards him, keeping two fingers on the top of it so it won't fall off her lap. "However, I thought it wouldn't be too inappropriate to give you a gift in celebration of... this holiday."
He takes it from her and peels back the wrapping carefully. He can tell by the way it's messy under the smooth surface she did it herself, and it makes his stomach flutter a little. In the box is a scarf - a fluffy, white one - and she smiles when he lifts it out of the box.
"Thank you," he murmurs, and wraps it around his neck. It's a little long, but it's all the more incentive to scoot closer to Elizabeth and wrap the remaining half around her neck. She leans against him - her skin is freezing, he notes, but did she really feel it? - and he feels guilty for tempting her like this. She had already mentioned she shouldn't (couldn't) pursue the feelings she had for him, and yet --
They sit in silence, watching the clouded sky, until Elizabeth finally moves from him and requests they return to their respective homes, lest someone grow worried about them.
