Title: "beginning?" "beginnings." [1/3]

108/365. pokemon au.
“Can I really keep her?” She asks, kneeling by the Vulpix and her mother laughs, nodding. “I was younger than you when I got my first Pokémon, as was your father. I don’t see why not.”
Masaki smiles widely, scooping the brown fox into her arms and standing; she hugs her mother tightly, only flinching away when the Vulpix complains at the closeness. She starts up the stairs then hesitates, looking down and biting the inside of her lip.
“Does this mean I can go out on my own, too?” Her mother pauses - she’s thinking, Masaki can tell, and she wonders if it’s hard to have her last child leave home as so many others had done - and nods. That’s enough for Masaki to giggle and fly the way up the stairs, ducking past the empty rooms of her older brothers and start packing.
She kisses her parents goodbye the next morning and stands at the southern end of Ecruteak City, peering at a map and kneeling down so Vulpy can see. The closest city - and most obvious choice to go to - is Goldenrod; Olivine’s the other, and after a quick round of rock-paper-scissors they decide on the first. Masaki folds the map up, slips it back into her bag, and starts her way to Johto’s biggest city, with her Vulpix at her heels.
