Title: Maestro
Characters: Spada Belforma, his brothers
Rating: PG
35/365. warning for pet abuse.
Spada's first pet is a stray dog he finds while he's avoiding his house in Regnum; it's much older and much bigger than him (ten year old that he is) but it doesn't growl when he approaches it and it only wags its tail when he asks if it has an owner. There's no collar, no kids shouting names, nothing to go by, so he grins and takes him home. He sneaks him in and gives him a good bath, brushing and scrubbing matted brown fur until it becomes shiny and soft, and he's amazed at how well-mannered the dog is. Spada brings him up to his room, tugging the still-wet fur carefully to direct him, and once he's got him in his room he rushes back to wipe up the drops of water that mark their trail.
He names the dog Maestro and sneaks him food every day, doing a damn good job of hiding the big, shaggy old thing – except for one day when two of his brothers sneak in to lay a trap for him and Maestro howls and barks his head off at them, gnashing his big teeth and scaring the shit out of them. Spada's proud of him for that – gives him half his breakfast, right out of the same bowl, for it – but his mood sours when he goes out to train with Hartman and returns to an empty room.
His brothers, he learns through sneers and jeers and snide looks, have run his dog out of the house and into the bay, with a collar of rocks around his neck and no chance of living. It makes him sick with hate as they list what they did to Maestro (shot him with rocks out of a slingshot, beat his flanks with thin birch rods to make him howl in pain and move faster, laughed as the mutt struggled to keep over the water until it was too much for him and his old strength gave out) and how they'll do the same to any other stray he brings home.
Spada doesn't bring anymore.
