Title: a decent attempt
Characters: Cherryblod, Black
Rating: G
Black values truth.
It's why he never lies—at least outright. Omission is different, omission is... if they don't know something, it can't hurt them. It's something he's thought about over and over again, from the three years spent with his sister trapped in the hospital he'd submitted her to, to the almost month and a half he spent working as a mole for the Kingmaker. Kingmakers, he corrects himself; he only kept in touch with one of them until the end, after his work had been revealed, but there were two of them.
(Neither of them that he particularly liked, though Ryuunosuke wasn't too terrible for company.)
So trying to lie to Cherryblod is—difficult, because Cherryblod knows how he works; he knows that Black lies solely through omission, and he dedicates their talks to questions that Black can't omit anything from. Usually, it's okay; usually, Black has no reason to lie or omit or anything like that, and their conversations about how things are going and about the world (worlds) are pleasant and full of genuine smiles.
Today isn't that way: he doesn't want Cherryblod to know he fucked up in a fight with Yosuke and that's why he can't attend said-person's birthday party being held in three days. Things will smooth over in time (they always do, with letters and apologies he means at least three-fourths of, and kisses shared under store awnings when there's less people on the street), but right now, things are tender.
Things need time apart.
Things do not need a fatherly shrimp-person giving him Looks and gentle pushing into apologizing now rather than later, just because he wants to make sure they're happy, and they definitely do not need any hint of anger, because Black's not scared of a lot of things—but Cherryblod's expression when he's pissed about something?
Terrifying.
Unfortunately, Cherryblod sees right through his attempt at faking a cold that's too bad to talk with, and Black shrinks in his seat as Cherryblod's smile turns a little harder and he leans forward on the table, asking him how things are between him and Yosuke as of late.
